Internal hauntings stirring within multiple personalities activated by sleep deprivation caused by a remarkable series of synchronicities and events is only one propellant of automatic drawing for Alexandra Eastburn, just as automatic drawing is only one approach to the artist's habitual need to create. Her work explores a multitude of techniques, nearly all of them concerning the recyclable nature of the materials themselves. Rarely is the bulk of any one creation an initial purchase. From drawing and painting, to collage, clothing construction, and paper-mache sculpture, Eastburn's work is an experimental proliferation of transformation, incarnation, mutation, possession, premonition, addition, subtraction, adjunction, division, and calibration. Inevitably for the artist, there is a consistent theme of conflict between the body and it's operator, and the dynamic nature of the human spirit.
"Your Little Garden Is Shuddering" is Eastburn's fourth exhibition since she graduated with a BFA in Fine Arts (concentrated in drawing, with a minor in art history) from Memphis College of Art in the spring of 2012. Previous exhibitions include a group show, "Public Housing," at the University of Memphis, a collaborative large-scale paper-mache installation, "Imagine The Angels of Bread," at a Baltimore, MD, DIY space known as The Holy Underground, and a solo retrospective,"Wild Life," at the new Glitch gallery in Memphis. She is currently based in Memphis, TN.
