LAVA Architecture presents emergency ‘Origami Cave’

LAVAS emergency shelter Pavilion is an inhabited molecule.

Concept.

The design is based on a water-moleculeand makes reference to the the Japanese Metabolist concept of prefabricated capsules.

The project also references LAVAs project of Digital Origami, where flat elements are folded into contemporary 3-dimensional shapes.  The base molecule can either be shipped as a flatpack, cut out of local plywood, or dropped of by a helicopter.

space:

The interior can then be carved out of wood or Cardboard or other locally available materials.  The project plays with ideas of prefabrication and personalised inhabitation, as well as

stacking of multiple units, while giving an opportunity for individual expression on minimal space.  Each unit contains sleeping space for 2 adults and one child as well as a little space for eating and reading.

fabrication:

For the showcase in Sydney it is suggested to CNC cut the layers of Plywood individually and stack them on top of each other.  Lighting will bring the exhibit to life and almost turn it into a lantern, a sign of hope.

Jak, an oversize “statement” timepiece by Karim Rashid is the designer’s second watch for Alessi. Its name and design are a playful take on Rashid’s first design, the Kaj, which is still a popular seller. Available in gray, pink, green, white, black and violet, Jak features a polyurethane casing and strap with an acrylic glass face.

WasteLandscape, A project by Elise Morin and Clémence Eliard

“WasteLandscape” is a 500 square meters artificial undulating landscape covered by an armor of 65,000 unsold or collected CDs, which have been sorted and hand-sewn. It is well known that CDs are condemned to gradually disappear from our daily life, and to later participate in the construction of immense open-air, floating or buried toxic waste reception centers.

Made of petroleum, this reflecting slick of CDs forms a still sea of metallic dunes: the artwork’s monumental scale reveals the precious aspect of a small daily object. The project joins a global, innovative and committed approach, from its means of production until the end of its “life”.

“WasteLandscape” will be displayed in locations coherent with the stakes of the project: art role in society, raising consciousness to environmental problems through culture, alternative mode of production and valuation of district associative work and professional rehabilitation. Over the course of multiple exhibitions, “WasteLandscape” will go through quite a few transformations before being entirely recycled into polycarbonate. The roaming will allow both artists to pursue new awareness-raising activities.

The installation has been developed by Elise Morin (an artist) and Clémence Eliard (an architect) in collaboration with the 104.  The pair sewed the discs together by hand, before blanketing them over dune-like wire constructions. The current location of the exhibition is inside the Centquatre — a Parisian art space that, appropriately enough, was once a funeral home.  The building has been refurbished by atelier Novembre: Marc Iseppi & Jacques pajot.

“WasteLandscape” is at the crossroad of contemporary art, landscaping and environmental concerns.

colette x Aston Martin Cygnet City Car

Aston Martin has joined forces with Parisian fashion authority colette to produce the strictly limited edition; ‘Cygnet & colette’ luxury city car.

To celebrate the collaboration, 14 examples of the ‘Cygnet & colette’ city car will be handcrafted via the company’s ultimate personalization service; Aston Martin Works Tailored which offers limitless options personalized precisely to customer specification through the marque’s world famous Works Service facility.

The Aston Martin design team worked closely with their counterparts at colette to create the striking limited edition which features Lightning Silver paint with exclusive colette blue styling details including a race collection inspired front bumper and bonnet livery, mirror caps and diamond turned road wheels. The Bitter Chocolate themed interior takes inspiration from colette’s mascot Oscar, the chocolate-brown Labrador.

The Works Tailored team has created unique ‘Cygnet & colette’ elements including:

• Stainless steel hand formed and engraved door handle badges

• ‘Cygnet & colette’ branded hand enameled boot badging manufactured by Thomas Fattorini

• Quilted Alcantara sun visors to complement the quilted leather door and seat inserts

• Hand trimmed, quilted colette blue leather occasional cushions for the rear seats

• ‘Cygnet & colette’ branding on satellite navigation start up

• A unique ‘Cygnet & colette’ key ring machined from solid aluminum with blue enameling.

Aston Martin Director of Design, Marek Reichman said: “Aston Martin and colette are both cool brands that successfully blend modernity and innovation. It made perfect sense to work together and create this limited piece of automotive fashion for the city.

“The colette car is the first of the exclusive ‘Cygnet &’ collaborations. These cars will give Aston Martin a relevant platform to reach out to new customers in urban areas.”

Elegant and distinctive, individual and practical, the Aston Martin Cygnet is the ultimate Tailor-Fit solution for city living. Launched in May 2011 with first customer orders arriving at European dealers now, Cygnet is hand-crafted for the city and like every Aston Martin it can be uniquely personalized to suit individual taste and style, bringing a new level of luxury and bespoke capability to city cars.

Since opening its doors 14 years ago in March 1997, colette has reinvented the concept of retail, becoming a Parisian landmark. The state of the art store is the first stop for many visiting the French Capital thanks to the incredible selection of exclusive, unusual and beautiful luxury items.

This bespoke Cygnet is an expression of colette’s values and style and the perfect choice for city driving. It comes with a selection of goodies to ensure that every trip is fun and to pass the time in the traffic including candies, a Wallpaper* Paris guide, a custom Sigg bottle to stay hydrated and the latest colette compilation CDs.”

The colette team focused on materials, colors and styling to create its limited edition Cygnet demonstrating the extent to which an individual or organization can tailor any Aston Martin to their own personal exacting taste with the company’s Works Tailored programme.

Orders for the 14 ‘Cygnet & colette’ pieces can be placed through the colette store in Paris for delivery by the end of the year.

Orrefors by Karl Lagerfeld: A unique collaboration in design and craftsmanship

Creator, photographer, designer and editor Karl Lagerfeld likes nothing more than expanding his modes of expression. With an insatiable curiosity, always in search of new creative experiences, this multifaceted artist has had an uncommonly rich career, during which he has developed a perfectly chiselled graphic identity. Now, after all the fashion, the perfumes and accessories, Karl Lagerfeld is releasing his first line of crystal.

Given his exacting perfectionism, the designer could never have collaborated with less than the best: The Orrefors glassworks has been a Swedish institution for over a century, carrying on the age-old tradition of hand-blown glass shaped by master artisans. With its exquisite engravings, streamlined forms and colours ranging from delicate to rich, the Orrefors brand is one of the great symbols of Swedish design and luxury. It is a world-wide brand, gracing the finest tables such as the Swedish Royal Palace.

Knowing the artistic excellence of Orrefors to be comparable with the world of high fashion, Karl Lagerfeld designed a collection in his own image: Clean-lined, subtle and functional. The first members of the Lagerfeld crystal family are champagne flutes and coupes and wine, water and liqueur glasses. Transparent, black or milky white, sometimes engraved with the KL monogram, the series typifies the Karl Lagerfeld ethos of ultra-strict lines. And in the spirit of the designer’s well-known practicality, the series also includes monogrammed coasters to prevent any trace of an errant drop on an immaculate tablecloth.

Based on the same principle, the collection also features a large round bowl, a rectangular vase and a cylindrical vase, each poised on four crystal globes on transparent platforms.

With its simple colour scale, its purity of lines and shapes, the flow of the material and the refinement of the details, each crystal contour of the Karl Lagerfeld series reflects timeless elegance. The collection bestows a new, harmonious and modern face on the century-old Orrefors expertise.

The Karl Lagerfeld collection of Orrefors crystal will also be available in gift boxes containing pairs of monogrammed champagne flutes and separately sold boxes of engraved coasters to place under them. These will be available in Europe as of 1 September 2011, then released in the United States for sale exclusively at Bloomingdale’s from 15 October, to go nationwide on 1 November. The Karl Lagerfeld series exudes functionality down to the tiniest detail.

Stockholm Design Lab Creates Identity for New Landmark in Copenhagen

This past May, Bella Sky (part of Comwell) opened and is Scandinavia’s largest hotel.  It creates a distinct new profile on the Copenhagen skyline with the architecture of 3XN.  The two towers reach up to 76,5 meters, and lean out 15 degrees.

“Our goal was to turn the powerful architecture into graphic design.  We wanted to create a simple system and memorable for,” says Bjorn Kusoffsky Creative Director Stockholm Design Lab.

SDL has created the new identity and signage system for the 814 room hotel.  A unique typeface is made taking its inspiration from the architecture and is used throughout the design system; hotel rooms, amenities, menus, signage, merchandise and other supporting material.  A stunning 17 meter long sign welcomes the guests.  The identity for three restaurants and sky bar is designed to support TEA’s interior of Bella Sky.

PLUMEN: The World’s First Designer Low Energy Light Bulb

Plumen is the antithesis of low energy light bulbs as we know them. Rather than hide the unappealing traditional compact fluorescent light behind boring utility, Plumen 001 is a bulb you’ll want on show.  The Plumen bulb uses 80% less energy and lasts 8 times longer than incandescent bulbs, giving you the opportunity to purchase an ecological product with style. It works just like any low energy bulb but it has a lot more presence.

The Plumen 001 is built with beauty at its heart, glowing with the aesthetic of a sculptural object. The forms the glass tubes take are irregular yet harmonious, as the two organic shapes mirror each other to create symmetry.  The name Plumen comes from ‘plume’ – the bird’s decorative feather, designed to attract attention to its’ prowess and beauty. We believe our designs do the same for the neglected low energy light bulb.

The first Plumen concept design joined the very prestigious permanent collection at MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York, while the second was featured at the Victoria and Albert museum in London.  The Plumen 001 design was developed in collaboration with designer Sam Wilkinson – http://www.samuelwilkinson.com
