Preview the First Furniture Collection by Architect and Designer Rafael de Cárdenas
Johnson Trading Gallery will be presenting the first collection of furniture by architect and designer Rafael de Cárdenas on May 13th. Paying homage to Bruce Goff and Frank Lloyd Wright, the furniture in this collection takes the cube as the underlying structural form. Through rotation, mirroring and multiplication, each piece is composed from a simple set of relationships – cubes fastened by triangular or semi-circular forms – that are both decorative and essential structural elements.
This series of unique pieces come in a variety of finishes – plywood, neon gradients, veneered cypress, among others – true to the designer’s signature aesthetic and penchant for bold lines, color and contrast.
The collection includes such highlights as a set of three cabinets, each increasing in size and detail, with seemingly anthropomorphic features: their diamond-shaped legs slim down to precious, pointed feet that hold up a far larger torso of a similar shape.
The full collection includes: two benches, a console table, a dresser, a pair of nightstands, a hexagonal dining table with six nesting chairs, a planter chair, and three cabinets.
Rafael de Cárdenas has degrees in fashion from R.I.S.D. and architecture from U.C.L.A, de Cárdenas’ background includes designing for Calvin Klein, working with Greg Lynn on the World Trade Center site’s redesign and time as a Creative Director at Imaginary Forces. In 2005, de Cárdenas founded Architecture at Large in New York City. Using color, light, and pattern, de Cárdenas has created artful, imaginative interiors for boutiques, galleries, restaurants and private residences in London, Rome, Athens, Chicago, Miami, New York and the Hamptons. His work has been featured in Elle Décor, Vogue Paris, The New York Times, Surface and Metropolis in addition to others.
The collection can be seen at the Johnson Trading Gallery @ 490 Greenwich Street, NYC
