John Rocha at London Fashion Week

The Summer 2010 collection by John Rocha explores intensity and clarity of vision, and as ever with John there is a tenderness and charm but balanced with a defined sense of strength. Inspired by such diverse sources as the colors of a Sean Scully painting, the enduring love symbolized in the traditional Celtic Claddagh, the work of Alexander Calder, and just a touch of ska.

The colors while bedded in black and white, create a landscape of chalked hues of tobacco, almond, umber, egg blue, old rose, lichen green, sunset orange and pink, dusted throughout with sparkles of gold.

John’s love of texture is realised in new treatments of needlework and embellishment. Hand crochet is fashioned and treated to create filigree sculptures. Silk georgette is glazed and cut to create layers of texture in whimsical headpieces and delicate surfaces on jumpsuits, dresses and skirts. Patchwork panels frame exaggerated masculine tailoring and cascades of ruffles encircle collars and hems of sheer pleats and fine lace knits.

Sculpted sharper silhouettes in jackets and dresses play against soft volumes that are tucked and draped to float around the body in unexpected new proportions.

Menswear echoes the textures of the women’s collection, playing with elements of surprise. Super slim jackets and skinny trousers or exaggerated summer overcoats and knee length tailored shorts   are teamed with richly embellished t-shirts, shirts and collars.

The collection is accessorised with carved wooden heel gilly shoes, and petal dressed mules. John’s new Claddagh inspired jewellery is featured throughout with hearts and heavy gilt chains, rings, cutwork silver cuff and crowns.
