ROBERTO CAVALLI FALL/WINTER 2012/2013

Theme of the show: Imaginary animals from pure fantasy are born.  The prints come from hand-painted canvas, exhibited backstage at the fashion show, representing animal skins.  The ‘trompe l’œil’ effect is enhanced by the illusory mix of python leather printed with tiger or jaguar motifs, furs printed with python motif, or pony skins transformed into crocodile.  Mini skirts or ‘balloon’ dresses show the legs and are created with three-dimensional placed embroidery, in brocade or filleted fur, printed or inlaid.  Maxi skirts  are made of python leather painted with tiger motif; lasered mink with crocodile effect or cashmere cloth are combined with jacquard mohair sweaters or with entirely embroidered t-shirts.  Sculpture dresses in printed silk mousseline do not follow the line of the body, but redesign it and open large ruffles and flounces in silk organza embellished with tiny pleated ruffles and black lace.  Haute artisanship prevails throughout the collection weather it’s leather punched sequin mixed with micro feathers or embroidery in relief with three-dimensional effects to recreate animal mantles or reptile scales.  The jackets and coats, made of black python leather or printed with ocelot or tiger mantle effect, have structured shoulders and a narrow waistline. Naomi Campbell’s return to the catwalk for the finale made the show one of the most talked about at the 2012 Milan Fashion Week.

Just Cavalli Fall/Winter 2012-2013

The Just Cavalli Autumn/Winter 2012-2013 collection introduces an active attitude that gives the line a contemporary spirit: lightweight fabrics and animalier print.  Signature features of the Just Cavalli style are merged with the strong details of sportswear, creating a linear and dynamic silhouette. Shapes and fabrics recall the London of the ‘Swinging Sixties’: in the A-line cut of the short and mini dresses, in the double-knit yarn and in the inserts of light fabric, optical prints and lurex fibers.

Prints, a signature of the Maison Cavalli since its beginning, are geometric and reworked in animalier print: pied de poule prints inspired by jaguar skin, trompe l’oeil print created with images of knots, chevron printed fur, or lace-trimmed floral, jaguar and optical prints that recall zebra skin. The section dedicated to the Just Cavalli man is a synthesis of the themes present in the womenswear collection: the iconic animalier prints of the Maison flow against the linear silhouette and defined cut.

BCBG Max Azria Fall 2012

For the Fall 2012 collection BCBG Max Azria has an artful proposition: Harmoniously synthesize shape and color in new elongated proportions, fusing form and function to create a geometric abstraction of Bauhaus style. Hue, space and light create a composed palette, manifesting an architectural aesthetic. Lightweight skills, chiffons and crepe de chine are juxtaposed with woolen and luxe outwear. Contrasting hues and rich textures add character and depth to accessories.

United Nude exhibition + Pop-Up shop at Galeries Lafayette

United Nude launched in 2003 with the Möbius shoe. Ever since, it has established itself as an iconic brand at the intersection of design and fashion whose products are about clear concepts, elegance, and innovation. They are honored to open an exhibition and Pop-Up store at the exclusive Parisian department store Galeries Lafayette. Boasting the biggest shoe department in is known for its high class collections and uncompromising sense of style and luxury. United Nude’s Lo Res (short for low resolution) project is an innovative design method using computer software to design new products and re-design existing objects. On display are never before exhibited prototypes of Lo Res Shoes, Lo Res bracelets and an entire series of Lo Res design Lamborghini sculptures. On display are four collaboration shoes designed and made for Iris van Herpen’s bespoke runway shows. Iris van Herpen and United Nude have collaborated for five consecutive collections, joining forces to create one of the most advanced and innovative collaborations in the world of fashion today. The shoes on display are from the United Nude Ultra range. It is here where one can see best what United Nude’s design is all about: Elegant minimalist designs aimed at balancing perfect proportions with what appear to be impossible shapes by turning to architecture. The unique structural materialization of the shoes seems to defy gravity at times, resulting in the slimmest, lightest and perhaps some of the most beautiful women’s high heels ever made. Complementing the exhibition there is a United Nude Pop-Up shop where some of the brand’s existing iconic pieces and a selection of the Spring/Summer 2012 Collection are for sale.

Fab Gear : The Beatles and Fashion by Paolo Hewitt

The Beatles knew how much image mattered in the 1960s, and whether it was Nehru jackets, skinny ties, granny glasses, or the Cuban heel boot—if John, Paul, George, or Ringo wore it, the rest of their millions of fans followed. Renowned music and fashion author Paolo Hewitt takes readers on a fashion tour of the Beatles’ career and the trends they co-opted. From their Hamburg debut in sunglasses, leather, and black sweaters to the conservative suits they were ordered to wear by their manager Brian Epstein; from their infatuation with Pierre Cardin’s collarless jackets to their more casual corduroy; from their Mod madness to psychedelic spaciness to faux-military attire to hippie-chic—each style is revealed as a reflection of the music they made and the world views they embraced. Filled with fabulous photographs and with an appealing retro feel, the book features numerous images, many of which have never been published before. It offers insights into how the band’s meteoric rise and enduring success shaped their fashion choices. There’s even a chapter devoted to their hairstyles. Fans of all ages, as well as anyone interested in fashion, will be enthralled with this first ever Beatles stylebook that proves the Fab Four were as timely as they were timeless.

About the Author:

Paolo Hewitt began his career writing for Melody Maker and New Musical Express. He has contributed to newspapers and magazines as well books on sports, fashion, and music. He served as the official biographer for the groups The Jam and Oasis, runs his own Mod-style knitwear label in Italy, and has written a memoir, The Looked After Kid. He lives in London.

Rodarte Fall 2012 : Makeup by James Kaliardos for NARS Cosmetics

Rodarte Fashion Week, Makeup by NARS

James Kaliardos for NARS Cosmetics created the look for the Rodarte Fall 2012 runway show. The trend is windblown, bronzed skin, which fits perfectly with Rodarte. “We were inspired by Australia for this collection,” say designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy. “We wanted to reference Aboriginals, the outback, and the Dust Bowl, along with a Victorian reference and bring them together in a rugged way.”  NARS was going for a dusty look, with the skin contoured by a strong lip.
